Google Webmaster Academy Adds 20 New Languages

Back in May 2012 Google launched the Google Webmaster Academy which Google described as “built to guide webmasters in creating great sites that perform well in Google search results. It is an ideal guide for beginner webmasters but also a recommended read for experienced users who wish to learn more about advanced topics.”

Well Google has announced via their Webmaster Central blog that it is now available in 20 additional languages including Japanese and Italian.

Where Will Google Be In Ten Years?

On Google’s Webmaster channel today Matt Cutts answered the question:

“Where do you see Google Search 10 years from now?”

Matt Cutts certainly has some interesting ideas, sounds a bit like a sci fi movie.

Will Google Suspect Good Useful Links as Paid?

With the ongoing fear of manual link penalties or falling foul of Google’s Penguin update I Imagine Google are asked questions like the one below quite often.

This question is no doubt a typical example and Google’s Matt Cutts answered in this Webmaster Help video a few days ago.

“On our travel site, we recommend and link out to hotels and B&B’s in our niche. Our readers find it useful. They’re not paid links, so we don’t add the nofollow attribute. What stops Google from suspecting these are paid links and penalizing us?”

He basically says that the internet is all about links and you should link to what you like. So stop panicking people!

Website Went Down, How Do I get Rankings Back?

Matt Cutts put up a Webmaster Help video in response to this question yesterday:

“My website was down for a couple of days and now has lost all of its Google rankings. What can I do to get them back?”

Watch his answer below as I’m sure many of you have experienced this problem.

Let me know if you find these videos useful and if so I’ll publish them as they are released.

Google Launches New Opt Out Tool

If you don’t want some of your content appearing in any of Google’s other search services such as Google+ Local or Google shopping a new opt out tool has been launched.

It was announced on their Webmaster Central Blog yesterday that you can use the new tool to opt out of having your web site indexed in:

  • Google Advisor (a financial products search)
  • Google Shopping (I don’t know why this is included as its a paid search product)
  • Google Hotels
  • Google Flights
  • Google+ Local

This opt out tool is only for top level domain and not sub domains and webmasters can choose the option in Google Webmaster Tools.

Google Webmaster Tools

One issue that I can see is that you can’t choose which services to opt out of, it seems to be all or nothing and you can’t opt out of other Google services like  Google News, Google Image Search, Video Search, Google Maps, Google Book Search and Google Finance.

This new tool from Google is a result of its agreement with the US Federal Trade Commission over anti trust charges earlier this year.

So this tool maybe useful for some but the restrictions will render it useless for most as they have done the bare minimum required by the agreement with the US Federal Trade Commission.

What are your thoughts on this new tool? Let me know in the comments box.

Linkedin Search Has Got Smarter

Today Linkedin announced that their members will, as of today, start seeing improvements to the networking site for professionals. They have unified the search experience so you no longer have to search for different things separately such as people, jobs, companies and groups.

Linkedin state that “all you need to do is type what you’re looking for into the search box and you’ll see a comprehensive page of results that pulls content from all across LinkedIn including people, jobs, groups and companies.”

Linkedin

They have also added some other features to make search smarter:

  • Auto complete
  • Suggested Searches
  • Smarter Query Intent Algorithm. With these three features the more you search the more you will be understood and the suggestion etc will be tailored specifically to you. This means that now two peoples search results will ever be the same.
  • Enhanced Advanced Search – Deepen your search with additional filters
  • Automated Alerts – Save your searches and you will be alerted if the results change later on

Linkedin also state that their “search efforts are founded on the ability to take into account who you are, who you know, and what your network is doing to help you find what you’re looking for. And we’ll continue iterating on this with better ways to surface new kinds of content across Linkedin as well as more personalized results. The new smarter search is starting to roll out to members today and will be available to all global members in the coming weeks.”

This all sounds very impressive and it will be interesting to see how it changes search results, I will try it over the next week or two and let you know my thoughts, it will also be interesting to see your opinions which you can leave in the comments box below.

The Google Blocked Sites Feature Is Finally Discontinued

Two years ago in March 2011 Google launched a feature to allow you you to block sites you didn’t want to see in Google’s results. By September of the same year they had launched it globally but by January 2012 it has stopped working and hasn’t worked since.

Google has finally confirmed that their blocked sites feature has been discontinued. Google recommend that you use the Personal Blocklist Chrome Extension if you still want to block certain site from the results.

Google also state that you can download a list of your existing blocked sites as a text file.

Well once again its been a busy week, not only at the office with new SEO clients but also there has been lots of news from Google, Bing, Facebook and Pinterest amongst others.

To kick the week off it was reported that Facebook maybe about to start using that much abused Twitter feature, hashtags. I’m a bit surprised that they haven’t introduced hashtags well before now, anyway read all about it christomjones.wordpress.com/2013/03/18/hashtags-coming-to-facebook/

More news on Monday came from Bing.

Bing

I wrote 5 posts on Wednesday, the first was to cover another announcement from Google. The news was that Google Shopper was coming to smartphones with the launch of a new App for Android and iOS, once again though Windows phone users miss out. christomjones.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/google-shopper-app-released-for-android-ios/ Some news surfaced that morning that Google had “accidently” completely removed Digg from its index.

Digg

It was back later the same day but still that was some slip of the finger on a keyboard christomjones.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/google-accidentally-removed-digg-from-google-index/ The final piece of news from Google that day was that Youtube searches were now part of Google Trends christomjones.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/you-tube-searches-now-showing-on-google-trends/ Other news that day was from Klout, they announced the launch of a social analytics tool called Klout for Business which they hope will encourage businesses to take social more seriously. christomjones.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/klout-hopes-business-will-take-social-influence-seriously-with-its-new-product/ Finally on Wednesday I came across a great infographic about Twitter engagement christomjones.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/twitter-cheat-sheet-to-increase-engagement/

Three pieces of news on Thursday, the first was from Bing. They announced that their Snapshots feature was being expanded and improved upon with the inclusion of what they call “satori” which means understand in Japanese christomjones.wordpress.com/2013/03/21/bing-snapshots-improves-now-includes-satori/ Also that day Pinterest announced via their blog that the redesigned new look Pinterest site was now being rolled out to everybody after limited testing in January christomjones.wordpress.com/2013/03/21/pinterest-launches-redesigned-site/ Finally that day Twitter celebrated their seventh birthday christomjones.wordpress.com/2013/03/21/twitter-is-7-years-old-today/

Friday was a relatively slow day and to reflect that I only wrote one post, it was quite big news though. Google announced that Universal Analytics was being expanded into public beta. It has been designed with today’s multi device way of browsing in mind christomjones.wordpress.com/2013/03/22/googles-universal-analytics-expands-into-public-beta/
